no more holidays in the sun
Holidays In The Sun/ Sex Pistols
"A Cheap holiday in other peoples misery!"
I don't wanna holiday in the sunI wanna go to new Belsen
I wanna see some history' Cause now i got a reasonable economy
Now I got a reason, now I got a reason
Now I got a reason and I'm still waiting
Now I got a reasonNow I got reason to be waiting
The Berlin Wall
Sensurround sound in a two inch wall
Well I was waiting for the communist call
I didn't ask for sunshine and I got World War three
I'm looking over the wall and they're looking at me
Well they're staring all night and They're staring all day
I had no reason to be here at all
But now i gotta reason it's no real reason
And I'm waiting at the Berlin Wall
Gotta go over the Berlin Wall
Claustrophobia there's too much paranoia
There's too many closets when will we fall
...Please don't be waiting for me
Getting out of order here, already written up Beltane / mayday so it wil have to come later. So why am I quoting the old Pistols? Green punk. Windmills and global warming. UK election 2005.
That this blog began with 'In the beginning there was punk' [Note- Slits ref "In the beginning there was rhythm"]. First there was no future. Then there was a future. Now there is no future.
Beltane 87 at Silbury Hill to get married to Pinki on the top. Didn't quite work out. memories. In a taxi to Paddington to get there, with Teri (Greenham friend of Pinki's) and arguing with the taxi driver about nuclear weapons and he said "If the Russians weren't trying to take over, what is the Berlin Wall for then? That is never going to come down...
Then, amongst all the confusions of American Lisa being late and other things, I had flashes of 'visions', of war in Iraq (the Iran/ Iraq one, not more recent ones) and wading throgha sea of corpses, of Silbury Hill as a nuclear waste dump and of global warming. Of the whole landscape around Silbury/ West Kennet/ Avebury/ Salisbury Plain / Stonehenge turning into a desert. Turned into a patriarchal/ matriarchal sexualised dream of Greenham woman living in Sumerian style mud brick temples supervising an army of men planting trees to re-claim the desert. Maybe linked to Zos Kia/ Rape Min's description of hot dry desert and violent rape.
"What have we done to the earth, what have we done to our fair sister Ravaged and plundered and ripped her and bit her Stuck her with knives in the side of the dawn And tied her with fences and dragged her down" Jim Morrison/ The Doors / When the music's over (turn out the lights).
Back to the future, to 2005 . Big issue in many rural areas is windfarms. Most greens for them, but ambiguous, many planned are on huge and massive scale and opposed by 'countryside guardians' campaign which has a pro-nuclear sub-text. And turns out will all be futile anyway. Amount of co2 'saved' by windfarms totally wiped out by growth in cheap air travel.
Hence the Pistols quote at start. No more cheap holidays in the sun. No more cheap holidays on other people's misery. But who really cares? Hard to see how Greens can ever win mass popular vote once people suss the implications. Though if the 'peak oil' theory is correct, gonna happen anyway. Peak oil theory says we are nearly at maximum oil production levels now, and one industry analyst (got clipping form Independent but can't find it) reckons we could have $100 barrel prices within 3 years.
When Tinsel was doing her BSc Anthropology at Goldsmiths it was a lot more interesting than what i got taught at SOAS. Anthropology and Development (or was it Environment?) was one of her courses and some one with a German name summed up the problem - environmental policies will never be accepted becuase they place limits and restrictions on economic development and 'freedom'. On cheap holidays in the sun.
But my view since belatane 87 at Silbury has been choice- either we willingly accept restrictions on our economic/ social freedom [society = economy as Situationists say] , or (at some point in the future) such restrictions will be imposed by 'the environment' - by 'gaia dominatrix' as it were [see June 1st 2005 International Times blog below].
No sign of any willing submission to restrictions yet so looks like alternatve scenario will prevail.
